Albert Einstein once said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!” He wasn’t an entomologist, but entomologists around today agree that the sudden and mysterious disappearance of bees from their hives poses serious problems!
Bits and pieces of information about farmers’ concerns for bee disappearance (or colony collapse disorder) in 24 states around the U.S. have bubbled up to the surface, over the last year and a half, but hardly any large-scale media attention has been drawn to this potentially serious problem. Recently bees have gone missing from hives around Europe as well. The East Coast of the U.S. is reporting a 70% loss in commercial bee hive habitation, the West Coast 60%; these figures are staggering.
An article in The Independent discusses a theory that cell phone radiation seriously interferes with bees’ ability to navigate through the air. Regardless of the cause, the implications of this phenomenon are enormous – and it is alarming how rapidly this is occurring. From a NYT article on 2/27/07: “…one study says that honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in US, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts.”

Albert Einstien was a physist. Not a beekeeper. A google search on Einstien and Bees doesn’t reveal this oft quoted phrase. None of the people who use this quote can point to where exactly Einstien said this.
Don’t get me wrong. The loss of Bees would be a disaster for pollination but attributing this quote to Einstien is disingenuous.

Bees are not the only agents for the pollination process. Wind, birds, rains and other small animals have been known to carry pollens on remote islands before the inception of mankind.
Yes the extinction of bees will definitely affect mankind in someway. But millions of animals, plants and insects has gone extinct in a span of million of years.. hence it does not mean we have ceased to exist. But plants evolved much before insects bore life on this planet.. they did not need bees to evolve.

Unfortunately for us, bees are the ones that are doing most of the pollinating, considering they get right into the flower and get the pollen caught in the fuzz on their bodies, whereas birds, rain and wind don’t as much. Bees go from one flower to another several hundred times a day, making them the fastest and most direct pollination tool. So following that, if we lose the bees, we lose our most reliable form of pollination. We have an ever-growing population which means an ever increasing demand for food. If bees die, we lose MOST of our fruits and vegetables, meaning we also lose a lot of our population through starvation and possible massive wars over food sources.
I’m thinking we should worry a little more about this, considering the damage losing them will cost us.

Bees and all Hymenoptera insectes evolved together with flowers with who they are one and can’t be replaced. Flowers represent a characteristic of most recent plants species on which a gigantic number of species depends including humans.
The problem is that these insects who live with pollen do not develop resistance to toxic matters like other insects do by eating leaves that contains alcaloids and other toxins, therefore why they offer no resistance to increasingly poisonnous pesticids.
So yes, the disappearance of bees would be dramatic. It would be like canceling the existance of most of the latest species that appeared over the last millions of years. The only organims that would not suffer from this at all would be very old organisms such as ferns for example.

This claim was first made by a German beekeeper in the mid 90s. That is as close to Albert Einstein as this quote gets.

ha thanks for your comment; a google search on einstein does reveal this phrase… but you’re right that there is dispute over it and i maybe shouldn’t have put it in there. regardless, small change – the phenomenon is happening. i think that calling it disingenuous is going a little far, as it has been in many articles – and well i liked the quotation, so i threw it in. yea i realize he was not a beekeeper!!

This is scary stuff. Just one example of how the massive extinction rate that is currently ongoing (and will get worse as global warming accelerates) isn’t just about ‘saving the animals’ – this shit affects us and could put billion millions if not billions of humans at risk.
The loss of a species occupying key positions in ecosystems can endanger the entire ecosystem and ‘co-extinctions’ accelerate the rate of species and biodiversity loss. And think about how many potential cures for cancer, inspirations for biomimicry technologies and any number of other useful lessons we could learn from these species that we are losing as species go extinct.
I wouldn’t be surprised if our cell phone usage or some of the other many kinds of waves we’re constantly pumping into the air these days would have unforseen consequences on sensitive species. Let’s hope we can figure out what’s causing this bee die-off and find a way to fix the problem. If not, we could be in real trouble…

“Global warming” has nothing to do with the die off of bees. I would more readily believe that the pollen from genetically modified plants is most likely to blame!

The absence of bees is definitely not an issue to be overseen. I even think there is a lot more to come or, should I say, go away.
The global warming in general will not only trigger disapperance of bees, but a whole lot of other detailed, unpredictable events. All kinds of little effects will take place when climate changes evolve. Most of them will come as a surprise, and at first unnoticed, but when they occure they will all have there influence on the environment. The organisms or materials that are key-elemental for the survival of humanity will also be the most strinkingly. The question remains, will mankind be able to keep up the pace of finding solutions that are necessary to overcome, or maybe even prevent, these minor/major events as they will take place more often.
Anyhow, I find it fascinating just to be a part of these actual events.

After searching the web some more, reading articles involving the contribution of polution by humans and its effect on global warming, it confirmed my previous post.
If the current rise of temperature continues it will not only be the bees who are in trouble, but a lot more organisms will be threatened. In fact, according to studies, one-fourth or 25% of the world’s plant and vertebrate animal species is predetermined to become extinct by the year 2050, if of course the warming continues at the current pace.
Taking action, which we will probably do, and whether the outcome will be succesfull or not, in the end this century will be one of changes all over the world and the common way of life.

Brazil imported African bees in 1956. The experiment went wrong and 26 of the Africanized (=Killer Bees) hybrid queens escaped and migrated toward North, into Central America. The Killer Bees are very aggressive and they’ve killed at least 1,000 humans. In 1990 they appeared in Southern Texas, in 1993 in Arizona and in 1995 in California. The latest news about disappearing bee colonies came from Pennsylvania and some areas of Canada! To me this meant that the Killer Bees are interbreeding with our honey bees and the hybrids -according to the Smithsonian Institute web page on them, leaving their nests and hives “excessively” -and not surviving winters. Einstein was right about them -if the bees will be gone the only human survivors certainly will be forced to become cannibals…

All 3 of these continents had a thriving human population long, long before the first honey bee or white man made their appeared on the scene. I’m not surprised by this story. I am a Christian and believe we have very little time before the rapture. I believe we are seeing many signs and wonders in nature, weather that predict an event of historic proportions. This is all very interesting. The problem with most of us is we can talk this subject to death, but at the end of the day no one is doing anything to help. Everyone is more concerned about making more money then conserving what we have left on this world. I also find it very coincidental that there are many predication pointing to the end of the world in 2012.. while the bees are at their lowest point ever in 2008.. anyone.. anyone? Yellowstone is over-due, our north and south poles move more and more every year, peak of “sun storms” are predicted as well in 2012.. But lets all read these blogs, learn some interesting facts, and go on with our self destructive lives, shall we?

Pardon my English please, but many people are doing something. I am only a layman, an armchair reader of randomness but here are some of the things being done by institutes and individuals around the world. If you are worried about the bees, consider financial or logistic support.
There is an attempt to understand the impact of transporting honey bee colonies via truck, there is research going on as to the causes of the colony collapses either due to pollution, fungus, various insect species, magnetic changes, or combinations of natural and synthetic causes. There is also research going on to try and understand the role of wind pollination on crops both domesticated and wild. And there is research being done to try and understand the intricate impacts and roles of the thousands of other species of bees and thousands of other species of insects who either live solitary lives or are not honey producing creatures but are pollinators.
What scares me isn’t that there are “things happening.” This planet is fascinating and things seem to happen quite often, if not, I dare say, constantly. What scares me is that when “things happen” gossips feel that they know enough to really say that “no one is doing anything” and that the evil people are out to make money and that we are all doomed. Life is but a long string of details, but sadly these delicate details get smashed by media frenzy hammers. So, I wish those who are doing something much luck in understanding what is going on.

It is all very interesting and poinient we live in very interesting times indeed. now think about this, Bees have been exploited for centuries for their precious honey, it is their food supply and we leave them just enough to get them through the winter and to raise more workers.
Lets give thanks to the bees. We all love honey right!!! Bees work so hard to get that honey in the hope that they will proliferate and be fruitful. We take their honey and at the same time kill many of their numbers in the extraction process.
Think also of their food. not only the fact that their very skill as a pollinator is exploited only to be robbed of their stores when their services have been performed.
The pollen that the bees seek out is not what it use to be. hybridization and and GMOs have created proteins that many studies have shown to create problems in organisms. Pollen is rich in protein and with the widespread introduction of GMOs the bees immune system is breaking down.
Bees are the canary in the mine shaft and if you think that genetic engineering is safe then you may be in for shock when your system begins to break down.
These proteins are out of alignment with the natural order. i highly recommend anyone find alternatives, where possible, to ingesting them.

The bees never had it so good. Until 150 years ago or less, harvesting the bees’ precious honey required the death and destruction of the entire hive or colony.
Now please rack your brain and provide us with another reason that bees are supposedly disappearing in Europe when Europeans for the most part don’t allow the cultivation of GMO crops. Maybe you should just take up with a better class of scholars.

Really the staggering declination in population of bees is a indicator of worry. We should think over this seriously else nature will punish us. Einstein said it correctly,”If bees perish human will have 4 years left to exist….”

Although he was a physicist, I doubt if Einstein was ignorant enough to make such a comment. Most of our staple foods: corn, wheat, rice and the other cereals, are wind-pollinated. Losing bees would have minimal impact on human survival and would simply affect prices of insect-pollinated crops, which are more of a luxury than a staple.

Lard, not only that but human beings lived and did quite well in North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand for 40,000 years or longer (in the last two examples) without the first honeybee anywhere in sight. To even suggest that honey bees are a requirement or prerequisite for human life to exists little less thrive little less exist is a racist statement of the first order. What were the Native Americans, Aborigines, and Moros, chopped liver?
Actually honey bees are only needed to insure pollination in factory farming operations where a large amount of pollination, usually over a wide area, must take place in a short period of time. Anyone who believes otherwise doesn’t know enough about food or its production to know how to eat.

I hear a lot about the plight of Bee but get increasingly frustrated about the lack of advice regarding simple things we can do to make things good for the bees.
Not talking about buying silly bamboo bee houses, (they probably might work but hey why buy when you can easily build.) Thinking more about identifying plant species and flowers we can put down to make food available for them. With the changing climate, spring coming earlier bees are having to cope with freak frosts, a lack of food when they emerge and ever changing landscapes depending on what fad we all picked up on from the Chelsea flower show this year.
Apologies this sounds a bit ranty buts gets my point.
At what point do we stop saying oooh isn’t it terrible the bees are dying and start saying what can I do to help.
The worst part is I don’t have the technical expertise to help.
Anyone out there who knows about bees, let us know how we can help please.

Well, i actually do not pay attention to who said it. the important problem is if the bees came to extinct, would our lives come to an end?
Plus, i also feel mysterious why bees are disappearing. If they are dead by cell phone radiation, so where are their bodies? If they immgrant from 24 states in the US to somewhere else, where do they go?

without bees other species that get food from insect pollanation would be affected which would casue a mass chain reaction (eg) just think what the world would be like without ants everything that eats the ants would have to find a new food and the food that they chose would already be the diet of somthing else therfore a massive chain reaction would begin casueing many to die off and every animal has purpose and when 1 species dies it has a dramatic affect on others that befit from that animal therfore starting a new chain reaction which will affect more and more as the chain reactions occur more often and in the end you well you will end up with alot of dead animals which might not affected humans directly but we are on that chain so eventualy it will hope i helped you understand 🙂

hey on that note i think we should also do sth. about mobile phones… research says radiation given off by mobile phones interferes with bees’ navigation systems… they are not able to find their way back to their hives. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive’s inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers…
Let us resolve to switch off our mobile phones for some time everyday…. who knows we might help some lost bee to find its way to the hive…

It was the famous gardener Gurtrude Stein who noticed missing bees, and the subsequent failure of her tomato plants back in 1919.
She told her good friend Anais Nin (a crafty mathematician) who ultimately calculated the demise of humankind by 1929 as the bee population fell to 0.
Einstein simply corrected some of the math, coming up with the 4 year number. This number is still in dispute, however.
There is currently a study at MIT regarding this. So far, they have calculated the demise of humanity to be approximately 3 years, 268 days, 17 hours and 14 seconds after the last bee meets its end. Just thought you would want to know.

Please explain how the famous gardener Gertrude Stein’s tomato blooms were pollinated by honey bees. This only shows that Ms. Stein is completely and irrevocably ignorant about the birds and the bees as they relate to growing tomatoes. Tomatoes are pollinated by the movement of the vines caused by the wind or by slapping the plants with canes or large fans in a greenhouse setting. If you ever see a honey bee working a tomato flower it only means that the hive she belongs to is starving because she would not be working so poor a food source otherwise. I guess that means that Ms. Stein is a sadistic bee killer because she wants bees to work her tomatoes.

That video is not an explanation, it isn’t science, it is hardly even political propaganda… it is psychological terrorism. I don’t have a good opinion on the practices of Monsanto, but think the idea that they will acheive a globewide monopoly on food is far fetched. On the whole, these arguments have scarce basis and are mostly unscientific.

Honeybees in man`s care were dying before any manmade product was invented that is now being blamed.
All tests that are done are in laboratory conditions so an assumption of what is happening in the wild is made therefore becoming only an oppinion rather than fact.

I see no evidence that Einstein said anything of the such about the bees. Many people quote this but none offer a solid source, just that they read in somewhere (often on the internet) written by someone like themselves who also read it from someone else also without direct source, too. It floats about like a Chinese Whisper.
Indeed, it seems more likely that he didn’t say it because he was a physicist, not an emptomologist.

It says nothing about science, all the less that it be fallible. It only says that same criteria don’t always apply to different things.
Aeronautical engineers don’t rely on air viscosity for lift as it would be negligible at their geometric scales. They rely only on mass density. At the scale of insects, it’s a bit more like designing a vehicle to fly through honey; you have viscosity and you don’t get much delta-P so you need a whole new approach to design. Science is equally good in both cases.

There is new evidence to suggest the the Bayer line of chemicals called One such chemical, called clothianidin, is produced by the German corporation Bayer CropScience. It is used as a treatment on crop seeds, including corn and canola, and works by expressing itself in the plants’ pollen and nectar. Not coincidentally, these are honey bees’ favorite sources of food.
Shockingly, no major independent study has verified the safety of this pesticide. While clothianidin has been used on corn — the largest crop in the U.S. — since 2003, it was officially approved by the Environmental Protection Agency last year on the basis of a single study, conducted by Bayer. However, recently leaked documents show that the study was actually debunked by the agency’s own scientists, so the pesticide was effectively approved with no scientific backing.
It is beyond appalling to think that a corporation such as Bayer is willing to risk the loss of at least 30% of our crop production in order to maintain their holy profits. Contact the EPA to register your concern.

There ARE things that we can do to help save bees. Lawn and garden pesticides have been linked to Colony Collapse Disorder. Ironically, dandelions are an important source of early spring nectar for bees, but most people have been taught they are “weeds.” Keep your dandelions and help save the bees!

What really “bugs” me is that so many people are worried about if the quote was even made by Einstein. Fact is honey bees are dieing and nobody knows exactly why.
Regardless of the cause, the implications of this phenomenon are enormous – and it is alarming how rapidly this is occurring. From a NYT article on 2/27/07: “…one study says that honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in US, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts.”
When I researched this I found many articles that revealed findings that sited damage from seed treatment Clothianidin by Bayer
and genetically modified seeds by Monsanto
Multinational Corporations that place profit over poison.
I’m glad this has lead to a discussion if nothing else.

Ok I get it a far as the quote goes everybody want their facts straight and so on so forth. But if that is the ONLY thing that is concerning everyone and not the actualy dissappeaence of bees is what is startling. What everybody fails to realize is that everything is connected.There is a reason why everything is the way it is. But us being a destructive speceis have forced the earth to try to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions. (i.e. pollution) We may be the dominant speceis but that doesn’;t mean we rule Earth. I mean it sounds sort of hippie but Earth is our home. Our provider, not something disposable that can be made new again. That’s what’s wrong with everybody, including myself. We’ve grown used to our “luxuries”; being able to throw away everything and still get it back within almost an instant. I’m talking materialistically .
Yes, there are other pollinators in our world. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t allow the bees to die out. You know and maybe, for all we know the “quote” was just something the media devised in order to gain funding for whatever. Still though, it’s no excuse to allow this serious issue to be ignored.

Just a little comment about the killer bees comment. We don’t have killer bees in Europe, but the bees are still disappearing. Occams Razor people. The simplest answer is usually the right one.
Also, global warming is a fact. The Earth has for the past 2,000 years of recorded history been showing a cooling trend which only changed in the past hundred or so years. So not only is the Earth’s temp going up, it’s supposed to be going down. The only people who want us to ignore this fact, are the rich who profit from things not changing.

An English beekeeper has found the answer and solution to stop honeybees dying and yes it is quite simple, however do you think I can get past the chemically funded scientist or the chemically funded British Beekeepers Association.
Oh quess what my answer is a natural phenomena and works 100%.
My bees are not dying and produce 200lbs per colony all with no varroa or chemicals.
When will the beekeeping world wake up to my discovery?

I find your first statement humorous because the most successful wild honeybee colony I ever encountered was in a rusty, lead soldered & lined, high sulfur, Diesel oil fuel tank at an industrial Super Fund sight. It lived there for close to 30 years and was already in place when I first saw it. It could have been much older
Second the male enhancement product market is saturated or else you would be concentrating on that, right? Pray tell us then where this new non-chemical chemical bee ‘phenomena’ phenomenon comes from. Since you said it is all natural or not manmade you obviously didn’t contract with BayerAG or Archer Daniels Midland and have them whip you up a batch of it out of crude oil stocks or depleted Uranium…. Well did you???
Thirdly, since a ‘phenomena’ means something that can only be known by the senses and not through or by the human mind including rational though, just how many live honey bees must you grind into a fine powder or paste to get one gram of honey bee ‘phenomena’? Do you also employ a Co2 producing process like distillation, use a large hydraulic press or centrifuge to extract the finished product? In which case which harsh chemical solvents do you employ and do you only press or distill the bees’ Earthly remains to remove the last traces of the chemical solvents used to dissolve the bees’ ‘phenomena‘?

However your discovery sounds eerily similar to the cell phone radiation bugaboo that made the rounds a few years ago. Please tell me you don’t intend on fitting wee tin foil helmets on every honeybee to keep them from hearing voices. If you do, please leave me and my bees to our fate.
In the mean time, see if you can find out if there really is such a thing as Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD. Many many real scientist involved with apiculture doubt CCD exists or ever did.

I viewed a pro warming web sight in preparation for this post that showed a new map of the USA that purported to show a 200 foot rise in sea levels by… 2020, just 8 years in the future. Oh my word. Having just read all the comments posted here, it’s good to see people getting into the purported plight of our humble bees. I live in Australia and last year, at the Byron Bay Film Festival, I saw a wonderful doco on bees and the troubled apiculture industry world-wide. There were interviews with beekeepers from all over the world and with entomologists and biologists who have been closely following the troubling death and decline of the world’s bees – for many different reasons. But what came out of this film was a lot of information and encouragement for all of us, even those of us who live in cities, to have a go at keeping bees. There are people in New York and London keeping a few beehives on their rooftops and their bees get their pollen from surrounding neighbourhood parks and gardens. Where I live in the SE Coast of Australia, we are fortunate to have a lot of green spaces around us and it is not unusual to have a backyard beehive. Even schools have them here ! If you have a garden you can fit in a bee hive. They are easy and a great way to get kids involved as well.

Yes, gardens are helpful to bees, but don’t use pesticides, which have been linked to bees decline. Dandelions (and other similar plants) provide important early nectar to bees in springtime!

I think Liza Grey puts the case for bees very well (above). I live in New Zealand and bees are in trouble here as they are all over the world. Despite the bizarre claims of one of the writers above about there being no bees here before the common honey bee, New Zealand in fact has several indigenous sub-species of honey bees (as do so many countries), that were here millions of years before the arrival of humankind and that have nothing to do with commercial agriculture (see also other statements made above).
No one should make the mistake of thinking this is just about the common honey bee. There are many different types of bees and hymenoptera that are being affected by the increasing devastation of the natural world by human beings and the use of insecticides, GMOs and pollution in its many guises (even putting global warming aside for the moment).
To turn this important debate into an argument about who said what first, or whether people can spell is simply to create a testament to the foolishness of our species, period! Who cares whether Einstein said it or not; It should be a salutary thought to think that bees are in such difficulty. Pollinating hymenoptera are in serious trouble around the globe and we ignore their plight at our own peril.

In fact GM crops have done more to reduce and even stop the indiscriminate use of dangerous insecticides than Green Peace, PAN, and all the other anti-technology Luddite groups have in the entire 8,000 year long history of agriculture. For instance, as late as the 1960s 400,000,000 pounds of sulfur (a chemical sometimes used to fumigate entire buildings) was sprayed on cotton crops in America every year. With the advent of GM cotton this is no longer so. Many other crops went from sometimes 10 applications of dangerous insecticides every year to ZERO doses of insecticides. I call that improvement. What do you call it?

The truth is that a group suggested that this is so and applied for a government grant to study their thesis. Nothing was ever scientifically SHOWN or proven about bees being unable to find their way home. What was proven however was that the insecticides studied killed the bees before they had time to make it home. Another win for GMOs.

The most famous episode from his younger days was Einstein’s relentless pursuit of the Nobel Prize. He desired the Nobel so that he could afford to divorce his wife and be free to commit incest with a close female family member.
His theory of Special Relativity aside, in this respect Einstein has more in common with the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas or some of the pro Einstein people posting here, than he ever did with honeybees, beekeeping or the science of etymology.

Einstein was not a mathematician. He was a natural philosopher and he was rather poor with math; he always needed help with it. Minkowski tidied up special relativity, which Lorentz and Poincarè had worked out anyway by the time Einstein did it. Elsa has got nothing to do with Greek Penguins and, if Einstein knew little about entomology, he likely knew more about etymology than you seem to.
There’s not much use spouting so many inaccurate statements about Einstein. It would be more to the point to just say that appeal to authority proves nothing about the case; what Einstein said about bees is irrelevant, that’s all.

So in other words you are saying that Einstein didn’t know what he was doing when he expounded on his theory of relativity. Then you said that when Einstein was through doing what ever it was that he didn’t know that he doing, that he depended on the charity of others to tell him what he had accomplished.
Sure what Einstein said about bees is irreverent because there is no evidence what so ever that Albert Einstein ever said anything about honey bees. That is like you or I saying that Nero was a space alien or that Scooby-Do is a dinosaur. In other words there is less evidence linking Einstein to honey bees than there is evidence linking Moses to the Internet.
I am not the one who appealed to a “higher” authority, the posters who try to enlist Einstein in their war against modernity are the ones who pull untrue statement out of thin air and repeat these false statements as facts to bolster a weak position. I would be interested however in knowing what Einstein though about people violating the scientific principle by acting in this manner.

I think it’s better to simply point out that appeal to authority is a fallacy , withoutf making a hash of complicated topics. As for mentioning his marriage to a cousin, that’s the kind of thing sly politicians do in their campaign, it would be best avoided. Yes, Einstein became far too much of a cult figure and it isn’t such a good thing.

Education is a must! We can start by educating our next-door neighbors about the dangers of lawn herbicides and the benefits of dandelions and other often-scorned plants in our lawns. I see bees eating from my dandelions and dead ones after the lawn care companies do their jobs.
Learn to recognize the plants that grow on your lawn–many are edible to bees and people!
