Well, I didn’t update this in a timely manner – but to round out the Senate energy bill happenings:
* 65 Senators voted in favor of the energy bill and it passed through the Senate.
* The Senate passed the first CAFE standard overhaul in over 30 years, raising the standard to 35 mpg by 2020! This is great news for our environment, and consumers. Two years ago a similar CAFE amendment failed – which signals progress.
* Senator Bingaman’s RES didn’t make it onto the bill, which shows how far behind we are in developing any sort of global warming pollution legislation.
* House committees are finishing marking up global warming legislation, and Nancy Pelosi will combine the committee bills into one, final bill which will make it onto the floor in mid-June.

I know this was posted a while ago, but the bill is in its final stages and there is a chance that the two most important and effective measures won’t make it onto the final bill: 35 mpg standard by 2020 and mandatory 15% renewable energy standard by 2020. This is some of the most important energy legislation that has ever been considered and a big step to putting the US on the right track. Go to http://www.energybill2007.org to sign the petition and make sure the whole bill gets passed.
